Hamlet was written by William Shakespeare between 1599 and 1601 and is a story based on tragedy. Hamlet is the prince of Demark who has returned from college overseas to mourn his fathers death. When Hamlet returns he finds his mother already re-married to his fathers brother who will become the next king of Denmark. Denmark is on a high risk of invasion from Norwegian troops under the leadership of a young, inspirational prince named Fortinbras. After the untimely death of his father, Hamlet emotions begin to come clear. Contempt and anger become a daily emotion after his mothers re-marriage and suicide is a considered option. If not for religion, Hamlet would most likely commit suicide, but this is against his religious beliefs and morals. Hamlet feels self pity which is easily seen in the first line of the first soliloquy. We can see the repetition of the word too is used for the emphasis on the thick skin. Shakespeare uses the word melt. I think this for two reasons; one being that melting is slow but also to emphasise on the suffering and emotion it causes Hamlet as he cant take any more rumours, rumours surrounding the suspicion of Gertrude sudden marriage to old king Hamlets brother. When Hamlet talks about the melting of thick skin, I believe that he is referring to his family reputation. Hamlets self pity is seen best here, and resolve itself into a dew! . Hamlet wants everything to be over and to sort itself out. Hamlet is a religious person and its easy to see that Hamlet wishes he could kill himself. Hamlets suicidal thoughts are unable to be complete due to his beliefs. Here Hamlet blamesGod for not allowing him to die. I think this because Hamlet blames the Everlasting for not banishing a sin that which disallows him to commit suicide. This is best seen when he says not fixd his canon gainst self-slaughter. After his fathers death the world through his eyes is bland and boring. This shows us that Hamlet was obviously an admirer of his father and also shows what kind of character his father was, someone who could change someones life, make it more interesting. I think this because of the following quotation, How weary, stale, flat and unprofitable, Seem to me all the uses of this world! . In my opinion this shows the beginning of Hamlets downward spiral of depression that is to come. Hamlet is metaphorically unaware of what is happening around him. His life is inconsistent and is easily seen to be getting too much for him. This is shown in the following quotation, Fie ont ah fie! tis an un weeded garden. This is a great description as it gives us an image in our mind of what things are like for Hamlet. I believe Shakespeare uses un weeded garden to show us that the event in the garden which killed his father is the cause of all his problems. Hamlets disappointment in his mother shows through clearly in this soliloquy. A good example of this is, That it should come to this. This shows us that Hamlet obviously didnt want it to happen and that the way it happened. Further proof of his disappointment is shown in the following eleven lines, which heavily shows his bitter disappointment and the disgrace his mother has caused. Hamlet tells us that his father was dead for two months but then later tells us that he was dead for less than two months before Gertrude re-marries. This is used to emphasise the fact that Gertrude didnt wait long before re-marrying. Hamlet once again suggests that King Hamlet was a great man by saying, So excellent a king; that was, to this. Hamlets opinion of his father is very high, this is also shown in the following quotation, Hyperion to a satyr; so loving to my mother. This tells us that king Hamlet was colossus to his friends and to his kingdom, someone with exceptional importance. Hamlet tells the audience that his fathers opinion of Gertrude was and most likely still is very high. A great example of this is, he might not beteem the winds of heaven visit her face to roughly. This is a great way of showing what his mother meant to his father. Hamlet tells us that his father always loving to his mother. Hamlets opinion of his father not only gives us a good impression of him but a bad one of his mother. Shakespeare does this very cleverly, as it makes us feel what Hamlet feels; that his mother is a traitor and a disgrace to the Kingdom. Hamlet continues to flout his mother by telling the audience that she would hang on him. This gives us the impression that Hamlet believes that she use his father for respect and significance inside the country, which could also be the reason for her marrying Claudius so quickly. He also tells us that he doesnt want to remember his mother and fathers time together, it can be seen in the following quote, Must I remember? . This is a very large statement made by Hamlet which shows massive loss of confidence in his mother and implies that he wants nothing to do with her anymore. Hamlet continues his angry outburst with further insult to his mother. It is easily seen when Hamlet uses Frailty, thy name is woman. This is not only an insult to his mother but to Ophelia his girl friend and to all women in general. He describes them as frail which is a major insult and tells us that he has lost all confidence in women. This shows a big turning point in Hamlet character as hes been so loving to Ophelia but now insults her. Hamlets disbelief of the fact that her mother re-married so quickly is show in the following quotation, A little month, or ere those shoes were old. I think this shows that Hamlet still cant believe it is because the fact has been said many times. Hamlet shows sympathy towards his father in this quotation she followed my poor fathers body. I think sympathy is shown for more than one reason; one because he has died, secondly because he has been betrayed by his brother and wife. I think this is motivation for Hamlet to avenge his fathers death. Shakespeare uses a comparison by comparing Gertrude and Niobe. He compares the tears that they shed to allow us to imagine her mourning. But later Hamlet tells us that a beast would have mournd longer which implies that her tears were false. Hamlets disgust is further obvious when he repeats that his mother has married his uncle but insists that Claudius is no more like his father than he is to Hercules. This can be seen in the following quotation, but no more like my father Than I to Hercules. This shows us that Hamlet doesnt think that Claudius is good enough to replace his father, and that he doesnt deserve the opportunity to replace him. Hamlet describes Gertrudes re-marrying as being so fast that the tears in her galled eyes had not had the chance to dry. This can be observed in the following quote, within a month: Ere yet the salt of most unrighteous tears Had left the flushing in her galled eyes, She married. Hyperbole is used in this description to emphasis on how fast she re-married. Hamlet stresses that their relationship is moving along to fast, and is concerned that it will come to no good. This can be seen in the following quotation, O, most wicked speed, to post With such dexterity to incestuous sheets! . I think that Hamlet is disgraced by the fact that it is made so obvious and especially so soon after his fathers death. I believe that Hamlet doesnt want it to work out for them as he says, But break, my heart; for I must hold my tongue. Hamlet cant express his feelings as Claudius is the new king and it could danger him if he was to speak out. I think Hamlet wants the relationship to end for two reasons; one being that it would be less disrespectful to his father reputation and secondly so that he can talk out. Shakespeare uses dramatic irony here to help the audience realize Hamlet frustration as his mother is unaware of the fact that he is unhappy about the marriage. Hamlets first soliloquy is the one that sets the tone for all the others. This is where we are first introduced to Hamlets emotions and feelings. This is where the downward spiral off Hamlets life begins where we can see a mixture of emotions consisting mostly of anger, depression and self doubt, leading to suicidal and miserable thoughts. Hamlets anger and contempt at those around him in soliloquy one combined with the secretive emotions raging to be unleashed only set the stage for what is to come. Between the first and last soliloquies; king Hamlet reappears at the castle who is spotted by Horratio and Marcellus, two of Hamlets closest friends. Horration and Marcellus tell Hamlet of what they have seen and he demands to keep castle watch with them. Polonius and Laertes strongly advise Ophelia not to get in to any relationship with prince Hamlet. Hamlet tells his friends on guard that Claudius revelry makes Denmark a laughing stock. This is the first time for him to share his opinion on Claudius with somebody else. The ghost appears, and Hamlet calls out to it. The ghost beckons Hamlet to follow it out into the night. His companions urge him not to follow, begging him to consider that the ghost might lead him toward harm. Hamlet declares that he cares nothing for his life and follows the ghost into the darkness. The ghost, confirmed as the ghost of late Hamlet tells Hamlet all about how Claudius poisoned him and that Hamlet should avenge his death but not to harm Gertrude. In act II both Polonius and Gertrude have different theorys to why hes experiencing a sudden change in character, while Claudius sends two spys to spy on him. Hamlet decides to use a play which he has edited to remake his fathers death in an attempt to find out if Claudius really did kill king Hamlet and also to put on an act of insanity to fol those around him. Claudius becomes suspicious of Hamlet and decides that Hamlet must be sent to England but is talked out of it by Gertrude. After the play occurs Claudius behaves in a manner that confirms Hamlets suspicion. Hamlet kills Polonius who is listening in on a conversation between Gertrude and Hamlet. While Hamlet scolds his mother the ghost of king Hamlet appears and tells him not to scold his mother, and that she should stop living with Claudius which she agrees to do. Gertrude speaks to Claudius who questions here on Polonius death but Gertrude lies for Hamlet by telling him that her son is mad. Hamlet is thought to literally be insane after months of acting the role of a crazy person. Hamlet tells Claudius that Polonius body is being eaten by worms, and that the king could send a messenger to find Polonius in heaven or seek him in hell himself. Claudius demands that Hamlet goes to England. Hamlet accepts. Claudius states his hope that England will obey the sealed orders he has sent with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. The orders call for Prince Hamlet to be put to death. Hamlet intercepts the letter and makes sure that the instructions are for Rozencrants and Guildenstern to be killed. On a nearby plain in Denmark, young Prince Fortinbras marches at the head of his army, travelling through Denmark on the way to attack Poland. Fortinbras orders his captain to go and ask the King of Denmark for permission to travel through his lands. On his way, the captain encounters Hamlet, Rosencrantz, and Guildenstern on their way to the ship bound for England. Laertes secretly travels back to Denmark after hearing of his sister and father deaths. Hamlets fourth and final soliloquy takes place in act four scene four where his self pitiful feelings are best seen. This is best seen when Hamlet says How all occasions do inform against me. In this quotation we can easily see that Hamlet thinks that everyone and everything is against him which makes him even more determined to fulfil his fathers wishes. This is best seen in the second line, And spur my dull revenge. In this quotation we can see that Hamlet becomes jaded of seeking this revenge when he uses the word dull to describe it. Hamlets self confidence is seen to be low. Its seen in the following quotations, What is a man, Be but to sleep and feed? Here Hamlet asks the audience a question which is referring to himself. Hamlet implies that he is lazy and that he doesnt work towards fighting for his fathers revenge. Hamlet answers the question himself in this quotation a beast. Shakespeare uses comparison here to compare Hamlet to an animal. Shakespeare uses this technique to give Hamlet a feeling of despair that is obvious to the audience. Hamlet, uncertain of his purpose in life and why god made him the way he did. It can be seen in the following quote, Looking before and after, gave us not That capability and god-like reason To fust in us unused. Hamlet tells the audience that he has metaphorically forgotten his plan of revenge due to thinking about it too much. This can be best seen when he says, whether it be bestial oblivion, or some craven scruple of thinking too precisely on the event. I think Shakespeare uses this to remind the audience of his crazy side and to emphasise on the importance of the task. Hamlet goes on to talk about his cowardliness in the next lines. He stresses that his plan is only quarter wisdom and three quarters coward, which shows that it was thought of during times of anger and disappointment. He continues to say that he should have completed the revenge by now. This can be seen in this quotation, Why yet I live to say This things to do;' This shows how weak Hamlets character has become, he cant complete a task which he has all the reasons to do. Proof of this is, Sith I have the cause and will and strength and means To dot. In my opinion the reason Hamlet has not completed the revenge is because hes distracted by something. I believe that it is Fortinbras that distracts Hamlet from his revenge. A good example of this is, Witness this army of such mass and charge Led by a delicate and tender prince. Hamlets admiration for Fortinbras is distracting him from his task. I think hes jelous of Fortinbras leadership ability. I think this because he says, Whos spirit with divine ambition. Hamlet envys his ambition, its as if Hamlet compares himself to Fortinbras by comparing each others ambition and also their spirits. This shows how weak Hamlets character has become. Hamlet continues to brag Fortinbras by commenting on his motivational speeches. Hamlet says that Fortinbras can motivate his soldiers to want to fight for more fortune. This is easily seen in the following quotation, Exposing what is mortal and unsure To all that Fortune. Further emphasis is put on Fortinbras speeches when hamlet tells us that Fortinbras can motivate his soldiers to fight for something so insignificant. He can motivate them to fight where death and danger dares to fight for something that metaphorically has the value of an egg-shell. Hamlet once again compares himself to Fortinbras who will fight for honour even if its over nothing. A good example of this is, But greatly to find quarrel in a straw. What Hamlet is trying to say is that Fortinbras is fighting for his uncles honour where he cant fight for his father honour. This shows the disintegration of Hamlets confidence and what was a strong, focused mind at the beginning of the play is now a shy, distracted character. Hamlet then states the obvious and shows further depression and disappointment. This is shown best in, How stand I then, That have a father killd, a mother staind, Excitements of my reason and my blood, and let all sleep. This is a very deep quotation from Hamlet as it shows that Hamlet cant understand why he hasnt completed the task. This shows uncertainty in his character and also disappointment in himself. This shows us also that Hamlet believes hes letting his father down. This is best seen in the following quotation, to my shame. This shows that Hamlet is ashamed of himself. Hamlet is intimidated by Fortinbras as he is willing to risk the imminent death of twenty thousand men for a fantasy and trick of fame. Hamlet is embarrassed because he isnt risking anything for his fathers revenge. Hamlet tries to assure himself that Fortinbras bravery will not come to good, as he is misleading his soldiers. Which can be seen in the next quotations, Go to their graves like beds and Where? n the numbers cannot try the cause, Which is not tomb enough and continent To hide the slain. Here Hamlet is convinced that twenty thousand men cannot be buried on the land which they are fighting for. Hamlet decides that from now on he must be concentrated on the task ahead. He decides to be more like young Fortinbras. This can be seen best when he says O, from this time forth, My thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth! . He decides to be more concentrated in his quest for revenge. He makes sure from now on that he must be more aggressive. At the beginning of the play Hamlets emotions are mostly dominated by anger and contempt towards members of the family and also sadness due to the death of his father. Frustration and disappointment become key throughout the beginning of the play as these emotions are also used to form Hamlets character as we know it. Inconsistency in Hamlets day to day life causes more frustration and causes him to lose trust in others, mainly his mother who he is very disappointed in and blames for all the disheartening it has caused him. Due to Gertrudes sudden re-marriage Hamlet feels let down and becomes very angry because of the un loyalty she has shown to her late husband, Hamlets father. After his fathers death Hamlet looses one of his closest friends and most importantly a role model in his life and therefore has no one to look up to and to guide him. Shakespeare uses many techniques throughout the beginning of the play to form Hamlets character and to effect his emotions. For example he uses many comparisons in the first soliloquy between not only members of the family but also to describe his life. For example, Shakespeare compares Hamlets life to an Unweeded garden which gives us the impression that it is out of control. He also compares Hamlet to Hercules, saying that they are nothing alike. This tells us that Hamlet is physically and possibly mentally weak. Shakespeare uses hyperbole when describing king Hamlet. This is best seen when Hamlet says, Hyperion to a satyr. The exaggeration is in Hyperion to emphasise on the importance of his father to Hamlet but can also give us the impression that Hamlet is dependent on his father. Another technique that Shakespeare intentionally uses is using intense detail in a subtle way. For example Hamlet says that if it wasnt for religion that he would commit suicide. This tells us two things about Hamlet; one being that Hamlet feels suicidal and secondly that he is a religious person. Between the first and fourth soliloquy a lot of things cause a change in Hamlets character; Due to Claudiuss poor leadership and man management of the country we see Hamlet open up for the first time in the play and share his opinion with another person. Hamlet is shaken up by the fact that hes seen his fathers ghost who informs him that Claudius killed him and asks him to avenge his death. His frustration increases for a number of reasons; One being that he knows that Claudius killed his father and secondly that his mother is sleeping with his fathers killer which cause much heartbreak and distress which can be seen in the following quotation, But break, my heart, for I must hold my tongue. After Hamlets decision to take up an act of insanity which I believe to be one of the biggest changes in his character throughout the play shows us that he is ready to take responsibility of avenging his fathers death which also shows maturity. Although showing maturity and responsibility it may possibly show the beginning of Hamlet actually becoming insane. I think that this is the beginning of Hamlets real insanity as he purposely kills Polonius, someone who had not affected his father and who was not in Hamlets original plan of revenge. Another reason why I believe that Hamlet is on his way to becoming insane and a real killer is because he seems to be unaffected by the fact that he has caused the deaths of Rozencrants and Guildenstern. In soliloquy four we see almost a completely different character to what we saw in the first. I think this because his emotions have changed due to a change in desire. In soliloquy four we can see that Hamlet shows self pity which is a sign of a weak and unconfident person. It is easy to see that Hamlet is less depressed towards the end of the play as he does not feel suicidal. A good example of Hamlets self pity is in the opening line of the soliloquy, How all occasions do inform against me. All though Hamlet has not completed his revenge he still remains determined but the revenge is not so enjoyable as he describes it as being dull which shows sadness. Hamlet believes that he has become lazy which is a definite change in character. At the beginning of the play Hamlet was a hard worker, studying in a university in France. Hamlets character has changed considerably when talking about bravery. At the beginning of the play he was so determined and brave to considering that his father had died. But by the fourth soliloquy he has become in his own words a coward. I think Shakespeare used coward to describe Hamlet as that is the lowest a man can fall in terms of pride and being masculine which further shows how low on self esteem Hamlet is. Hamlet used to be such a focused and determined man, but by the end he is shy and distracted by the deaths of a number of people in the play. Another reason for Hamlets distraction is the young prince of Norway, Fortinbras. Hamlets admiration of Fortinbras grows throughout the play to become what I believe to be jealousy. I think this because of the obsession with his motivational ability and his desire to fight for honour and respect when he himself cannot. I think Shakespeare uses Fortinbras to intimidate Hamlet to show the audience that Hamlet has no confidence. This is a very clever technique used by Shakespeare as it is done in a subtle way. Shakespeare uses more comparison in the fourth soliloquy to show how ashamed of himself and his family Hamlet is by comparing himself to Fortinbras. Hamlet blames himself for the state his family is in. A good example of this is, how stand I then. Finally, Shakespeare uses hyperbole to emphasise on the pity that Hamlet shows towards the twenty thousand Norwegian soldiers that are about to lose their lives. On a hole Hamlets character has changed massively thorough the play. Shakespeare uses techniques such as Hyperbole to add to the drama and always writes in such detail throughout to supply a constant feed of information. At the beginning of the play Hamlet was a; suicidal, confused, angry and sad character who could not cope with his fathers death and mothers re-marriage. Hamlets self pitiful emotions and inconsistent day to day life lead to an out poor of depression and anger towards Claudius and his mother which cause him to kill on many occasions. Hamlets frustration during the play lead to further determination to complete his fathers revenge and under constant pressure from Fortinbras to become a better leader was forced into being bloody minded. What was the young prince of Denmark became an insane monster riddled with jealousy.

They may face 3 serious effects of divorse; to be lonely, to be unsuccessful at school or in life and to turn to abnormal activities. the most intense emotion felt by children of divorced parents is, feeling loneliness and therefore feeling unhappy. Children feel strong, safe and confident when their parents are near them. However, as a result of divorse they have to separate from one parent so they can not see other parent much. Also single parent must work and can not devote enough time for children. for example, children can not find anyone at home when they came from school or when they have some problems and need to talk. The other effect of divorce is being unsuccessful at school. Problems experienced by the children in their private life leads to inability to pay attention to lessons so school grades begin to fall and children can lose their interests in school. They can start to fight with their friends at school because during they try to cope with the psychological and emotional dissolution, they can have difficulties to controll their anger sometimes. If children do not adapt to their new life order, school failure and bad behaviers such as fighting can result in leaving school and having difficulties in finding good jobs in the future. The last important effect of divorce is turning to abnormal activities like using alchol and substance. especially in adolescence, Young people can get bad friends and bad habits but their families try to protect them as much as possible. Parents do not leave them alone and help them to deal with their problems. On the other hand, children of divorced parents do not have such parental support consequently, they can not solve their problems alone and can develop their own methods to deal with problems. Due to It is difficult for this young people to defend themselves without parents, they become vulnerable. For example, some teens whose parents divorced, can choose running away from problems and can try to join different goups. This can cause being forced to do the same what theyre doing in the group. The group can disobey laws and commit crime or can use alchol and drugs so teens have to do these, too. In conclusion, Divorce means that a destruction of family and an establishment of a new life order instead. Personalities may be described as authoritative, weak, dynamic, or â€Å"magnetic†. Teachers’ personality must be natural and genuine, that is, devoid of pretenses and artificiality. They must be consistent, true and authentic. (Corpuz Salandanan, 2006 p.12) In the highly complex world of human relations, it is essential that the conscientious teachers be concerned not only with how students’ interact with her but how they interact with their peers and with other adults. But concern is not enough. Little can be accomplished until students’ problems pertaining to human relations have been identified. (Salandanan, 2010 p.18) Once the teachers is more aware with the social relationships among her students’ she is in the better position to select a technique for teaching human relations. Toward this end, the teacher must first identify students’ problems pertaining to human relations. The identification such problem gives the teacher a basis for considering what techniques for improving human relations she might employ. (â€Å"Teaching techniques for improving human relations†, p.459 n.d) No single factor can contribute more to an improved student achievement than the guarantee of a quality teacher in every classroom. No amount of classroom facilities and instructional materials can produced the desired learning outcome without a teacher at the center stage. Quality is synonymous to competence, creativity and commitment, contextualized in the teaching profession. Competence highlights a teacher’s adequate knowledge, proficient skills and trustworthiness. Creativity is a kin to originality,  flexibility and innovativeness. Worthwhile values of compassion and commitment provide the fine ingredients that make teaching truly humane and enriched with a sincere feeling of accountability. Quality teachers’ can be found in our schools today. Adequately prepared through quality pre-service programs and continually motivated to grow while in the service, their competence to teach is assured. The attitudes and values that they project in and out of the classrooms, in the home and community, provide positively and satisfactorily the answer to the perennial search for quality teachers. As paragons of virtues and progressive attitudes, they truly deserve the priceless rewards, recognition and emulation of the whole nation. With full pride and confidence, every parent and community can lay upon their chests the growth and nurturance of their sons and daughters for a promising future. (â€Å"Quality teacher†, p.7-11 n.d) The teacher rightfully deserves to be enthroned at the center stage of any educational endeavor. She is the distinct ray of light that illumines the mind touches the heart and buoys aloft the spirit of the young. Every effort, initiative or enterprise aimed to educating the young needs a magic hand to provide the much-needed direction, guidance and energy throughout the educational journey. Assuming a number of roles that a leader, counselor, assistant and instructional manager, there is no task that demands more waking hours, strength and attention than the teaching-learning episode. Competent teachers produce competent students. The desire to grow and learn more and more is vital to the development of an exceptional proficiency and capability needed in the teaching profession. As a concluding statement, a definitive teacher personality is a picture of one who possesses outstanding mental, personal and social traits. Has a strong aptitude and interest in teaching the young, steep in worthwhile values and attitudes and competent in both content and teaching methodologies. A Critical Analysis of The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman 'The Yellow Wallpaper' written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a riveting story of a dejected woman locked away as if she were insane. Her passion is to write and by doing so we are able to follow her on a journey in which she is victimized by those closest to her. The significance of the story is tremendous as it delves into the underlying issues of 'a woman's place' and feminism in the 19th century. The story not only gave an insight into the public perception of mental illness but it later caused a famous psychiatrist, Silas Weir Mitchell to alter his treatment of neurasthema. As the story begins, the woman-whose name we never learn-tells of her depression and how it is dismissed by her husband and brother who are both medical practitioners. "You see, he does not believe I am sick! And what can one do?" We are able to see that the narrator has maintained the traditional patriarchal feelings, as many women and men did in 19th century, where women are discouraged from venturing out of their 'given sphere', due to the political makeup of the era. It becomes apparent that her mind was alluding to this point by the way she speaks about her husband, "John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that." The structure of this sentence highlights the male laughing and the woman acquiescing, showed by the short sentence and the full stop - silencing any of her thoughts and opinions. An example of the dominant submissive relationship between them. He treats her as if she was a child and he was the controlling, domineering, yet loving parent. "What is it, little girl?' h... ...d self-analysis, and was symptomatic of the degeneration rife in society. This illustrates the protagonists warped head state as although yellow is associated with negativity, she craves it. This is portrayed when the protagonist claims that everything outside is 'green instead of yellow'. Her mind is so twisted that she feels everything outside of her 'sphere' is evil. The ending of the story is open to a variety of different interpretations. She feels victorious for escaping from her husbands grasp however in reality she is now trapped within herself. We feel that she may commit suicide due to her frustration, however the situation was reversed, and I was given the impression that she may have tried to murder her husband, in an attempt to free herself. However what ultimately happens we are never able to learn.

Mastering Audio

The History of â€Å"Mastering† Music, in most of its styles and forms that is targeting commercial distribution now undergoes a final process of transformation and quality verification known as Mastering. For those working within the audio industry, this process is an unavoidable step to pass through. The role of the mastering engineer is almost unknown and often unheard of.This status of the mastering process has over the ears gathered itself an almost mythical status in the industry. The art itself is quite often misunderstood and in certain cases considered unimportant. Through this essay I hope to explore further into the role of the mastering process and the position it has held over decades with changes in styles, technology and mediums of media distribution. â€Å"Mastering is the set of activities in the audio chain between the final production of the music on an intermediary format and its transfer to a distribution format. (Dominique Bassal, 2005) During the early days, the process of mastering was not a separate discipline that as followed by a different engineer. A recording engineer's profile would involve recording onto a disc cutting lather. Before the year 1925, the tools used to cut records was unsophisticated and worked in a fairly mechanical manner without the use of electricity. By the 1930's the advent of electricity in the audio industry like many other markets changed the way media was recorded, processed and finally distributed.The rise of the radio stations, microphones and the amplification of the stylus that was previously driven Just by a diaphragm into an acoustical horn has changed the way mastering works. The discs cut onto wax were used as stampers to press 78rpm discs using shellac-composite. This was the method of cutting/ producing records before the advent of tape. Mastering/cutting Engineer Post the second world war, the recording ot tape and micro groove LP were tlrst introduced. The introduction of tape recording changed the norm of master recordings almost always being cut direct to disc.This was the beginning of a separate engineer being in charge of using the session tapes to cut master discs. This person was not initially known as a mastering engineer but a â€Å"dubbing ngineer† or rather â€Å"transfer engineer†. â€Å"mastering was a black art practiced by technical curmudgeons who mysteriously made the transfer from the electronic medium of magnetic audio tape to the physical medium of vinyl. † – (Owsnski, 2007) This change brought about the industrial belief that the process of cutting the master discs from recording session tapes was not a very different technical skill than the vinyl pressing operation.The biggest problem as such with vinyl has been to safeguard the largest possible part of the audio fidelity of the master tape, by troubleshooting and working around he numerous downfalls and obstacles brought about by the medium itself. The technology o f cutting vinyl from tape came with its own set of limitations to a huge degree. To explain the groove on the record, the thickness of the hair carries pitch and tonal information laterally and the amplitude information vertically. The problems brought about by this system was that the bass frequencies would drastically affect the total width of the groove.This in turn would affect the determined length of the information being cut onto the vinyl. the thickness of the vinyl similarly affected the dynamic range available for each cut. The recording onto analog tape helped with these flaws to a certain extent through having a tendency to roll off the distinctly sharp high intensity transients. This tendency was due to the saturation that occurred when hit with too much level, which would result in the stylus Jumping out of groove or often burn the disc cutter head itself.Around this time larger record companies dealing with pop music were prioritizing the automation of the tape to dis k transfer as much as possible in the interest of production efficiency. One of the biggest advancements this brought about was the ossibility to determine the thickness of the grooves using analog computer circuitry. It eventually brought about the possibility of having record sides of up to, and in some cases beyond, 30 minutes. The equipment being used for the mastering process also had to be specifically developed for use in record production.The idea behind this was to protect the companies from the expensive cutter heads blowing up as well as to ensure a more quality consistent product.! The birth of the Mastering Plant It was not long betore a tew engineers in this industry realized that there might me a arket out there for mastering that is done with superior care and skill. This brought about the birth of the first independent mastering lab in Los Angeles during the late 60's. The art of mastering became more about the attention to detail, skillful use of the highest grade equipment available and a devotion to artistic satisfaction.This trend soon grew into a business where a master tape sent to a mastering plant run by a credible engineer such as Bob Ludwig, Doug Sax or Bob Katz would result in a disc that sounded phenomenal. lt was during this time that the name of the astering engineer was listed on to the credits of the albums. Mastering trivia: ! â€Å"A significant step in this extension of the role of the mastering engineer, even if ephemeral and exclusively linked to a specific musical style, was the dance mix fad, today devolved, in a modified form, to the D].A rhythmic pop song is delivered to the mastering studio with, along with its official mix, a series of excerpts, sub-mixes of rhythm sections, solo voices, etc. The mastering engineer constructs an extended version of the song, destined for, among others, nightclubs, adding as required upplemental effects and even sounds from other sources. † (Dominique Bassal, 2005) Mastering to day Mastering is still very much a part of the industry, although most of them no longer cut master discs from analog reel tape. The CD generation has definitely caused a huge change in the mastering process.This process is now known as mastering where the recording in its final stage is brought in recorded on to a digital medium and is then sent for pressing. In the older days, each record company would have its own in house engineers working to a pre determined standard set by the company itself. These standards ere for the calibration of recorders, level and metering standards, interfacing and conversion equipment, etc. A number of engineers would also custom build some of the equipment used in their studio. This time saw that the tapes that were sent to these mastering studios could have a consistency to quality and fidelity.The order of the songs on the record, short pauses between tracks and equalization would have already been dealt with. ! Today the mastering business is a v ery different market compared to back then. The material for an album made these days could have been sourced from a variety of ifferent places, ranging from large studio rooms to a bedroom studio. The mixing on the record could have been done using Just a computer and sometimes by the artist themselves. These changes make it a completely contrasting market to when the big record companies were around.It opens a new realm of artistic space to play with as well. This treedom however also attec ed t the technical aspects ot the production. ! It is due to these reasons that mastering engineers began to expect their clients to provide them the recorded and mixed product with certain measures taken into account. The client is requested to not finish aspects of the process such as song spacing, fades and final master levels for each song. It is in the benefit of the client to trust the mastering engineer to take care of such detailed aspects with the necessary skill set and experience.A f undamental point to remember in todays technological free market is that technical competence cannot be taken for granted. Todays mastering engineers are expected to take a body of work that is recorded, produced and mixed and transform it into a sonic piece that is well balanced and is aurally pleasing to listen to. It involves a meticulous binding, processing and reinforcing of sound to translate the artistic vision onto various forms of playback. Mastering Equipment The equipment used in the process of mastering is a range of extremely high quality units that perform very specific tasks in the overall chain.The most important tool however is and will always be the attention to detail through years of experience and critical listening. Equipment used at this stage today is very relative to what is being achieved through the process itself. The aspects that are of prime importance through mastering are he conversion of audio information from analog to digital domains, the consisten t but not squashed dynamic range, equalization and balance of the songs with respect to each other and the intricately combined amplification done using consoles, compressors and limiters.Acoustics: Mastering is the last and final stage between the product and its dispatch for replication and distribution. This is where the sonic fidelity of the album or any other work is Judged technically to suite the various listening conditions and environments that audiences consume music in. Acoustics is amongst the most important tools to chieving a neutral space where the engineer can fully understand the strengths and weaknesses of the pre master. Monitors: Reference monitoring systems for mastering plants are very different from the ones used in the mixing and play back stages.Monitoring systems for mastering rooms can be two way or three way systems that divide the trequency ranges to separate drivers so that they are individually emphasized to then pay special attention to. Plants usuall y run two or three sets of references. Adam audio, Barefoot sound and Earthworks are some of the biggest names in Audio reference monitors for astering. Amplification: Amplification is an important stage in the mastering chain and is integral to driving the sound clean and transparent through and out of the monitors.Another reason for amplification is to have a palette of colors to pass the audio through. There are usually at least two different amplification systems in a mastering plant. Console: The console is the heart of the mastering chain where everything comes together. It is the Hub for the audio that is passing through the outboard equipment, convertors and the DAW. Manley, TK Audio and Maselec are highly renowned mastering console anufacturers. DAW: DAWS are the software environments within which the Audio is contained and worked with.There is a wide variety of programs that specialize in different need of the mastering process, For example – Pro tools HD, DDP creat or Pro, Sequoia. EQ's: Equalization is the process of treating specific ranges of the audio to strike a smooth balance that will translate the music onto systems that may not always reproduce the entire spectrum from 20Hz to 20KHz such as earphones and car audio systems. Buzz Audio, Prism Sound and GML are amongst the biggest names for EQ's with regards toDynamics processors: Dynamic range is an integral part of preparing music and audio to a level of industry standard distribution. These processors are categorized into Compressors, Limiters, Exciters, Expanders and Gates. They are used to gradually make the audio translate with a benchmark RMS and Peak level that varies in ratio across music, film, television and radio broadcast. Manley, Cranesong, API and Tubetech make extremely high grade Hardware Dynamics processors for mastering. Convertors: Convertors are arguably the most important tools in the mastering chain today.The amount ot media that is generated completely in the digi tal domain is significantly huge. Conclusion: The art of Mastering as a discip line was first considered to be a technical process within the larger process of making a record.Over the decades this art form came to recognition when its artistic impact was noticed by people from the industry such as the artist and producers themselves. This brought about the Mastering Plant Revolution. The skill set and aesthetic value brought into the production process by mastering engineers have grown to be invaluable in this day and age of digital distribution. It is through this evolution across almost five decades that todays mastering studio serves as the last and final stage of technical and artistic quality control for most recorded media. Solving the Water Problem with the Help of LifeStraws

The risk of drinking contaminated or unsafe water is high for people who do not have the means of providing themselves and their families the privilege of safe and clean water. Water-borne diseases that affect these vulnerable groups include cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery, and Brainerd diarrhea (Division of Bacterial and Mycotic Diseases, 2005). Vulnerable groups have not been clearly identified as even those with the money and those with access to safe water are being affected by these diseases but, it is rational to point out that those without proper systems or access to safe drinking water such as the poor in the developing countries are at higher risk for the abovementioned diseases. It is the desire and advocacy of the governments all over the world and the United Nations to pursue their efforts of â€Å"halving the number of people without access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015† (UN Department of Public Information, 2005). It is with these great hopes that the said actors have launched the â€Å"Water for Life† decade last March 22, 2005 in sync with the World Water Day (UN Department of Public Information, 2005). In line with all these abovementioned problem and advocacy, it is but timely that the concept of LifeStraw ® has been developed and are now in being utilized for use in places where access to safe water remains to be a big problem. LifeStraw ® is a â€Å"complimentary point-of-use water filters†¦ that will help people obtain safe drinking water at home and outside† (â€Å"LifeStraw ® at a glance†). Its main purpose is to be a tool that will act as a filter for unsafe drinking water making it fit for consumption and reduces the risk of water-borne diseases for the people. However, a piece of LifeStraw ® comes with a price as there are materials and labor which has to be compensated for its production. It is a cost that is needed to continue the production of such and would have to be considered by people using it and those who are advocating for clean water. It would be confiscatory in nature to require the maker of LifeStraw ® to continuously produce the said product without being paid. The cost for the production of such was pegged at $3—a cost that would be way below the benefits it could bring. Being equipped with the knowledge of business ethics and being socially-aware and socially-responsible students and individuals, we would like to personally make our contributions in the purchase and distribution of such LifeStraw ® for the poor and the vulnerable. The life of a LifeStraw ® would last up to three years and this would already make a big difference in the lives of those who would be given the chance to own one. We plan to purchase 200 pieces of LifeStraw ® to be distributed to individuals and families. The organizations and agencies concerned would first have to be identified so as to organize the solicitation that would have to be released by our group. Groups would be identified in consideration of their financial capability and the interest they would have to express on this charity work they would be involved in. After the groups have been identified, their contact numbers would have to be obtained through websites and public dictionaries and this would be used to ask them to receive the letter we have for them as well as the contact person. Letter would be sent out after confirmation from the agencies that they are interested in such endeavor. A formal letter is ready for mailing and the interested agencies would be briefed about the advantages the LifeStraw ® will bring to the families and the good intention that our group has in engaging in such endeavor. Further information dissemination or information drive through the use of media or the least costly means would have to be employed such as website postings. It is expected that with the information campaign, the organizations would be able to access the necessary information for the intentions of our group and further linkages be established. Trust should also be established by providing personal networks and contact persons in each organization and would be highly appreciated by the group. With the money collected, the group will purchase 200 pieces of LifeStraw ® for distribution to the most vulnerable groups. This will be identified in cooperation with certain groups. It is also the plan of the group, as feasible, to ask for a thank you note from the families who have been blessed with the opportunity of owning a LifeStraw ® that will be sent to the organizations who have helped us and to acknowledge the effort they have exerted on giving these families and individuals a better living condition. Otherwise, a simple thank you note would have to be given from the group stating our utmost gratitude for the given assistance. The problem of unsafe drinking water would be ameliorated by the abovementioned steps that our group would like to take. However, it is still with much concern that someone or other individuals and groups would continuously exert the initiative to make the advocacy a continuous one until the targets of the governments and the UN would be reached. Further collaboration with other organizations would have to be considered as the State is a good vehicle for continuing and providing social welfare services in cooperation with private entities and the civil society. The usual melancholy feeling surrounds Gary as he begins to trudge down the seemingly endless corridor to the silver doors of the elevator. As he looks out the window into the outside world the emerald green of the park almost seems to invite him, reminding him of better, carefree days. The Battle of Chancellorsville in the Civil War Conflict Dates: The Battle of Chancellorsville was fought May 1-6, 1863, and was part of the American Civil War. Armies Commanders: Union Major General Joseph Hooker133,868 men Confederate General Robert E. Lee60,892 men Background: In the wake of the Union disaster at the Battle of Fredericksburg and subsequent Mud March, Major General Ambrose Burnside was relieved and Major General Joseph Hooker given command of the Army of the Potomac on January 26, 1863. Known as an aggressive fighter in battle and a severe critic of Burnside, Hooker had compiled a successful resume as a division and corps commander. With the army encamped on the east bank of the Rappahannock River near Fredericksburg, Hooker took the spring to reorganize and rehabilitate his men after the trials of 1862. Included in this shakeup of the army was the creation of an independent cavalry corps under Major General George Stoneman. To the west of the town, General Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia remained in place along the heights they had defended the previous December. Short on supplies and needing to protect Richmond against a Union thrust up the Peninsula, Lee detached over half of Lieutenant General James Longstreets First Corps south to aid in gathering provisions. Operating in southern Virginia and North Carolina, the divisions of Major Generals John Bell Hood and George Pickett began funneling food and stores north to Fredericksburg. Already outnumbered by Hooker, the loss of Longstreets men gave Hooker over a 2-to-1 advantage in manpower. The Union Plan: Aware of his superiority and utilizing information from his newly-formed Bureau of Military Intelligence, Hooker devised one of the strongest Union plans to date for his spring campaign. Leaving Major General John Sedgwick with 30,000 men at Fredericksburg, Hooker intended to secretly march northwest with the rest of the army, then cross the Rappahannock in Lees rear. Attacking east as Sedgwick advanced west, Hooker sought to catch the Confederates in a large double envelopment. The plan was to be supported by a large-scale cavalry raid conducted by Stoneman which was to cut the railroads south to Richmond and sever Lees supply lines as well as prevent reinforcements from reaching the battle.   Moving out on April 26-27, the first three corps successfully crossed the river under the guidance of Major General Henry Slocum. Pleased that Lee was not opposing the crossings, Hooker ordered the remainder of his forces to move out and by May 1 had concentrated around 70,000 men around Cha ncellorsville (Map). Lee Responds: Located at the crossroads of the Orange Turnpike and Orange Plank Road, Chancellorsville was little more than a large brick house owned by the Chancellor family which was located in a thick pine thicket forest known as the Wilderness. As Hooker moved into position, Sedgwicks men crossed the river, advanced through Fredericksburg, and took up a position opposite the Confederate defense on Maryes Heights. Alerted to the Union movement, Lee was forced to divide his smaller army and left Major General Jubal Earlys division and Brigadier General William Barksdales brigade at Fredericksburg while he marched west on May 1 with around 40,000 men. It was his hope that by aggressive action, he would be able to attack and defeat part of Hookers army before its larger numbers could be concentrated against him. He also believed that Sedgwicks force at Fredericksburg would only demonstrate against Early and Barksdale rather than pose a legitimate threat. That same day, Hooker began pressing east with the goal of getting clear of the Wilderness so that his advantage in artillery could come into play. Fighting soon erupted between Major General George Sykes division of Major General George G. Meades V Corps and the Confederate division of Major General Lafayette McLaws. The Confederates got the better of the fight and Sykes withdrew. Though he retained the advantage, Hooker halted his advance and consolidated his position in the Wilderness with the intention of fighting a defensive battle. This change in approach greatly irritated several of his subordinates who sought to move their men out of the Wilderness and take some of the high ground in the area (Map). That night, Lee and Second Corps commander Lieutenant General Thomas Stonewall Jackson met to develop a plan for May 2. While they talked, Confederate cavalry commander  Major General J.E.B. Stuart arrived and reported that while the Union left was firmly anchored on the Rappahannock and their center heavily fortified, Hookers right was in the air. This end of the Union line was held by Major General Oliver O. Howards XI Corps which had camped along the Orange Turnpike. Feeling that desperate action was needed, they devised a plan which called for Jackson to take the 28,000 men of his corps on a wide flanking march to attack the Union right. Lee himself would personally command the remaining 12,000 men in an attempt to hold Hooker until Jackson could strike. In addition, the plan required the troops at Fredericksburg to contain Sedgwick. Successfully disengaging, Jacksons men were able to make the 12-mile march undetected (Map). Jackson Strikes: In position by 5:30 PM on May 2, they faced the flank of the Union XI Corps. Comprised of largely inexperienced German immigrants, the XI Corpss flank was not fixed on a natural obstacle and was essentially defended by two cannon. Charging from the woods, Jacksons men caught them completely by surprise and quickly captured 4,000 prisoners while routing the remainder. Advancing two miles, they were within sight of Chancellorsville when their advance was halted by Major General Daniel Sickles III Corps. As the fighting raged, Hooker received a minor wound, but refused to cede command (Map). At Fredericksburg, Sedgwick received orders to advance late in the day, but held off as he believed he was outnumbered. As the front stabilized, Jackson rode forward in the darkness to scout the line. While returning, his party was fired on by a group of North Carolina troops. Struck twice in the left arm and once in the right hand, Jackson was carried from the field. As Jacksons replacement, Major General A.P. Hill was incapacitated the next morning, command devolved to Stuart (Map). On May 3, the Confederates launched major attacks all along the front, forcing Hookers men to abandon Chancellorsville and form a tight defensive line in front of United States Ford. Under heavy pressure, Hooker was finally able to get Sedgwick to advance. Moving forward, he was able to reach Salem Church before being halted by Confederate troops. Late in the day, Lee, believing that Hooker was beaten, shifted troops east to deal with Sedgwick. Having foolishly neglected to leave troops to hold Fredericksburg, Sedgwick was soon cut off and forced into a defensive position near Banks Ford (Map). Fighting a superb defensive action, he repelled Confederate attacks through the day on May 4 before withdrawing across the ford early on May 5 (Map). This retreat was the result of a miscommunication between Hooker and Sedgwick, as the former had wished the ford held so that main army could cross and renew the battle. Not seeing a way to save the campaign, Hooker began retreating across United States Ford that night ending the battle (Map). Aftermath: Known as Lees perfect battle as he repeatedly broke the tenet of never dividing ones forces in the face of a superior enemy with stunning success, Chancellorsville cost his army 1,665 killed, 9,081 wounded, and 2,018 missing. Hookers army suffered 1,606 killed, 9,672 wounded, and 5,919 missing/captured. While it is generally believed that Hooker lost his nerve during the battle, the defeat did cost him his command as he was replaced by Meade on June 28. While a great victory, Chancellorsville lost the Confederacy Stonewall Jackson who died on May 10, badly damaging the command structure of Lees army. Seeking to exploit the success, Lee began his second invasion of the North which culminated in the Battle of Gettysburg. It is important to note and mention that a person who can afford a housemaid can be considered to be well off or a person of class and social status. Secondly, when she mentions that a dear friend of Torvald Helmer called Dr Rank had gone to visit the Helmers. A doctor is also a valuable and respectable member of the society and the fact that one could be friends with one shows that one is of repute and consideration. Thus. Helene as a character is used to show the difference in class and stature that exists between the Helmers and the rest of the society who are poor or ordinary people. In retrospect, the fact that the Helmers are friends with the doctor, Dr Rank shows that he and his wife were people of relative means and ability in the society.
